Ingredients

1 1/2 cups yellow split peas

1/3 teaspoon turmeric

2 teaspoons salt

oil for frying

1 teaspoon cumin powdered, roasted

1/4 teaspoon chili

1 1/2 cups onion, chopped

2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped

Preparation

Wash split peas and soak for one hour. Drain. Put split peas and turmeric in large pot and cover with water by about three inches. Bring to a boil, skim the scum, and simmer until peas are soft. When they are thoroughly cooked, add salt.

In the meantime, fry onions in the oil slowly, so they don’t burn, until they are a golden brown. At this stage add the cumin and chili powder.

Add water if the mixture is too thick. Serve garnished with chopped cilantro.
